What is a dilated exam?
A dilated examination goes beyond your routine exam, with more extensive testing to determine the overall health of your eyes. Dilating drops will be administered. An extended visual field test, as well as retinal and anterior photographic testing will be performed to allow the doctors to gather the correct information to examine your eyes.
What to bring to your dilated examination?
At your dilated examination, dilating drops will be administered to your eyes during pre-testing. This allows your doctor to closely examine the health of your eyes. These drops will cause blur in your vision. For most patients, the blur subsides within 4-6 hours. Those with lighter colored eyes can have longer lasting blur than those with darker colored eyes. We STRONGLY recommend having a trusted person drive you home from your appointment, or having arranged reliable transportation from our office. We do NOT recommend that you drive yourself to and from your appointment, to ensure road safety for all. Due to the dilating drops, your eyes may become more sensitive to light, and so we recommend bringing a pair of sunglasses to wear on the way out of the office. We can provide you with flexible smaller shades if necessary. Please bring an updated physical copy of your medical insurance, so our front desk can have it on file!
